Explore Saint Simons Island, Georgia
Visit the Fort Frederica National Monument which was established by Gen. James Edward Oglethorpe in 1736 to protect the Georgia border from Spanish invaders to the south. Nearby, see the beautiful Christ Church where Methodism founder John Wesley preached. At the south end of the island, tour the St. Simons Island Lighthouse and museum. The gold color of the marshes of St. Simons Island inspired Sidney Lanier to write a poem known as "The Marshes of Glynn".
There are frequently arts, crafts, and antique festivals on weekends and the annual Sunshine Festival is held over the Fourth of July weekend. In the spring and summer months, the Jazz in the Park series is held Sundays on the lawn of the St. Simons lighthouse.
St. Simons Island has glorious beaches that can stretch out for hundreds of yards at low tide. Go fishing or crabbing at the fishing pier on the south end of the island near the lighthouse, or charter a boat for in shore or off shore fishing. Rent a catamaran, sailboat, kayak, boogie board or windsurfing board. Bike paths line almost every street on St. Simons Island, and bike rentals are available. St. Simons Island also has many challenging golf courses. If you're looking for a room with a view, The Lodge at Sea Island Golf Club is reminiscent of an English country manor with all of the guest rooms overlooking a bracing combination of emerald fairways, swaying cedar trees and St. Simons Sound.
St. Simons has many unique and delicious places to eat. All restaurants in Georgia are non-smoking, except those which do not allow patrons under the age of 18. There are many places that serve seafood, casual and fine dining. Halyards is an example of fine dining and was named the winner of the Wine Spectator Award of Excellence.
